I have yet to figure out what the big deal is with Final Fantasy. I would like to get into it, but the one time I played it the combat was just frustrating. What do fans of the series find so engrossing?

As a Final Fantasy player of since the very first one i have to say the main reason is for the story. I enjoy a good Fantasy story and Final Fantasy brings it to "life" by letting you control the charecters in the game I know that to a regular gamer that is new to the series. It starts off a little slow, but if you get engrossed into the story line, you get trapped.
As for the combat, it is a Role Playing Game and it is the same for most. But Square Enix likes to throw occasional "differences" to get the gamer involved in each fighting sequence. It could be a series of command like in final fantasy 6 (3 in the states SNES) for sabin, or powering up your summons or what not. Role playing game fighting can be redundant, but Square Enix tries to keep it colorful and exciting. And that is something that fans of the series are used to. i would say try Final Fantasy X. The fighting is not that difficult but keeps you interested with its updatd graphics. Its story line is also easy to follow and gripping. Trying anything earlier that that without a "love" for Final Fantasy may leave a person to forget playing al together since it does not compare with the graphics of nowadays games.
